In 1998, Middlesex Community College became one of the first community colleges in the country to establish a Carnegie Academy on its campus. This is a group of faculty and staff who pursue research and projects related to the scholarship of teaching and learning. Senior Carnegie faculty, as well as new Carnegie faculty, will be offered the opportunity to become involved in the NECIT project. In addition, the Middlesex Community College Carnegie Academy is now leading a cluster group of eight other colleges. Five of these institutions are in the New England area: Pine Manor College , Salem State College, Holyoke Community College , Northern Essex Community College , and Fitchburg State College . This cluster offers a rich opportunity to share project information across institutions.
Middlesex Community College has also been selected as one of 13 colleges throughout the country as an exemplar of civic engagement. Recently, it received a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service to implement a civic engagement educational model with Lowell National Historical Park . Since civic engagement, by its very nature, requires working with diverse constituencies, the work completed as part of this project will help to inform the NECIT project at Middlesex. In addition, Middlesex is a national leader in service learning, with more than 30 courses offering this option. The NECIT needs assessment will explore ways in which service learning is currently supporting inclusive teaching, as well as new ways in which it can do so.
