An open enrollment, two year college, Massasoit admits students of all educational backgrounds and skill levels. Chronically under-funded and currently facing severe budget cuts, Massasoit –like many other community colleges—represents in most extreme form both the hope and the challenges of democratizing access to higher education for diverse students in the United States. Its students are increasingly diverse and its faculty are predominantly white, and in many cases, not far from retirement age.
In comparison with the other institutions in the NECIT cohort, MCC’s students are probably the most varied in levels of skill, academic preparation and English-language facility. Although there are some campus-based events that focus on teaching, faculty carry a heavy (5/5) courseload and do not enjoy opportunities for collaborative work on teaching issues.
